Nottingham Playhouse Prize

The Nottingham playhouse prize is an opportunity to design for the playhouse and to work with a director and production manager.

We would be working with Fiona Buffini on the play Duchess of Malfi which is a Jacobean play written in 1612 designed for indoor theatre.

The play has alot of themes that are very relevant today so is a play that has been designed many times and still relevant to audiences of now.

There are four main characters involved: the Duchess, Ferdinand, The cardinal and Bossela.
The Duchess of Malfi promises to her brothers (the Cardinal and Ferdinand) that she not marry again, however she is in love with her steward Antonio who she marrys and has a child by in secret.

Ferdinand is in love with his sister the Duchess so sets about putting a spy (Bossela) in the court to establish who she has married.

The play revolves around the corruption of the brothers and their attempt to control their sister. Dark play written to be more of an adult play full of corruption, sex and power.
