For this workshop we created a puppet out of polystyrene. We started by drawing a design on to the polystyrene then cut this out using a hot wire or bansaw, after this is done we then cut the profile and work on shaping the polystyrene into the face shape that you wish. This is achieved by using pullsaws, rasp and knives. I found this process quite good because it was easy to shape the polystyrene and to give it a good smooth finish. The good thing about polystyrene is that you can make the head any size that you wish and you can adapt it to any design that you have. It is also very light material to work with so it doesn’t add weight to the overall puppet, the only problem I found with this material as that your design can change as you go along so this might not be useful if you have a specific design. I found that the hot wire was a little difficult to use at first because there is no resistance and you have to keep it moving, also if you don’t keep it steady then you end up with unwanted grooves and if you don’t keep the wire level the back of the polystyrene will be smaller than the front.
